Wildebeest Migration

Wildebeests are vegetarians, so they follow the rains to get fresh grass. The predators follow the Wildebeests. Herds of Antelope, Wildebeest, Zebra, and other non-predators migrate across the Serengeti each year; they travel in large numbers for safety.

Leopards

This Leopard had made a kill the night before and was resting in the morning hours in the tree. He ate his dinner and spent the rest of the night in the tree.

Cheetah

Cheetahs are the fastest mammals on Earth. They usually hunt alone, by running down and asphyxiating their prey. We saw two mature males working together to feed a litter of young cheetahs.

Elephants

Elephants travel in herds for safety and companionship. The herd is led by a dominant female. Young males remain in the herd until they reach puberty, at which time the dominant female drives them from the herd.

Elephants knocked over and feasted on the acacia tree, then left excrement to help fertilize the surrounding area.

Campsite

We stayed at a campsite overlooking the Mara River, where we watched wildebeest crossings during the day and listened to lions roaring at night.
